Baby Injury Due to Hospital's Medical Negligence

When a young pregnant woman went to Pottstown Emergency Medical Center in Pottstown, Pennsylvania on a Sunday evening in 2008 to deliver her baby, she had little idea that the experience would leave her traumatized and burdened for the rest of her life.
The woman was told by the examining obstetrician that her baby was dead based on an ultrasound with an outdated machine. The mother insisted that she could feel the baby moving. After an hour, a technician arrived with a newer machine and discovered that the baby was, indeed, alive. The mother was rushed into an emergency c-section.
The baby was found to have suffered from hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, a deprivation of oxygen to the brain that leads to cerebral palsy and other permanent damage. The child would be dependent on care for the rest of its life due to the injury.
During the lawsuit pursued by the mother, the hospital was found to be 100% liable for the baby's condition due to the use of outdated equipment, as well as a failure to provide a proper obstetrician (the hospital made it a habit of scheduling fill-ins on Sundays). The mother was awarded $78 million dollars to care for herself and her disabled child.
Medical negligence and incompetence can have dire life and death consequences. These medical establishments need to be held accountable for such risky behavior.
