Nevada Surgeon Told He Can No Longer Operate

This week, a surgeon in Carson City, Nevada was told that he must give up operating on patients as part of a medical malpractice lawsuit settlement. The surgeon, Dr. Lonnie Hammargren, once served as the Nevada lieutenant governor from 1995 - 1999, but agreed to give up performing surgical procedures to comply with a recent settlement.
Dr. Hammargren will still be allowed to keep his medical license under the confidential agreement that was offered today. The agreement was approved by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.
In 2002, it is alleged that Dr. Hammargren mishandled a brain tumor operation that had been performed on a 42 year old female at a hospital in Las Vegas. After the operation, the patient filed a malpractice complaint. Even today, Hammargren denies malpractice allegations. However, he told the Las Vegas Sun that he stopped performing surgeries in 2008 and no longer sees patients.
The amount of the settlement has not been disclosed.
