In Hartford, Connecticut, the family of a deceased woman is suing both the Hartford Hospital and an emergency room physician by the name of Dr. Carl Washburn. According to the lawsuit filed by the family, the hospital failed to keep a woman in treatment overnight even though she was dealing with suicidal thoughts in 2007. The family filed their
medical malpractice lawsuit in the superior court in Hartford after the death of their loved one.
The lawsuit states that the deceased woman, Marcia Maglisco, hung herself on October 8, 2007. The suicide occurred three days after Maglisco's 2 year old grandson drowned while under her care in her daughter's home. After the drowning, police brought Maglisco to the hospital because she was clearly distraught. While reporting the incident to a 911 dispatcher, Maglisco said. "I'm psychotic." She also said, "I want the police to shoot me, if they could."
In the lawsuit, the family alleges that instead of observing Maglisco, the hospital released her while she was in an emotionally fragile state. Because she was at risk for committing suicide, the family feels that the hospital acted negligently by failing to properly evaluate and treat Maglisco. After being released from the hospital, Maglisco hung herself in her home on October 8th. Prior to committing suicide, police had charged her with risk of injury for the death of her grandchild.
