When Physicians Take on Plastic Surgery Procedures

Would you let your physician take on a plastic surgery procedure for you, regardless of the fact that he was not formally trained to do so? According to reports, more and more doctors are performing facelifts, tummy tucks, and other invasive plastic surgery procedures simply to make a little bit more money on the side. Particularly in Georgia, news crews have discovered that many doctors are performing cosmetic surgeries with little to no training.

Investigative reports show that in some cases, patients have nearly died from the complications following these premature surgeries. The cosmetic surgery one woman received several years ago in Georgia changed her life, but not in the way that she wanted it to. According to reports, she went to a local doctor for plastic surgery, and the phsyicians told her that he was capable of performing the procedures to slim her and make her feel comfortable and more attractive.

During the patient's recovery from her surgeries, she found herself in excessive pain. She later discovered painful bacterial infections in her buttocks at the sight of the surgery. She ended up in the emergency room, awaiting treatment for her injuries. She also developed a high fever that would not break. Another victim of similar mistreatment says that she had an inch deep infection in her abdomen after she underwent multiple cosmetic weight-loss procedures in Georgia.

Both of the women who developed these tragic infections have one thing in common: they both did not commission professional plastic surgeons to do their procedures. Instead they were offered low rates from physicians who were not trained in plastic surgery. Most of the time, these physicians set up home offices or private offices in another location where they can perform the surgeries required without any accountability.

This is technically illegal, but many physicians do the procedures without ever being detected. It wasn't until patients started experiencing devastating effects that they started speaking out. One physician says that he has seen people get facelifts done by a family doctor, or has seen a pediatrician perform eye surgery. There are also records of women having their breasts reconstructed by internal medicine doctors.

While all of these doctors may be well-trained in their primary care area, they have not had rigorous training in cosmetic surgery. They Are also unable to select patients in a way so that they know which ones are less prone to complications. The Georgia Composite Medical Board does not put any restrictions on medical licenses. Therefore many of these individuals can get away with performing medical procedures without ever being prosecuted.

Doctors who have observed this situation say that they think it all boils down to ethics. Some doctors are financially motivated, and as plastic surgery increases in popularity it seems like a creative way to make some extra money. Physicians should always make sure that a patient is safe and won't suffer any harm before performing the surgery.
