Delayed Diagnosis
A delay in the diagnosis of a medical condition can easily lead to unnecessary complications and, in some cases, can cause an otherwise treatable condition to be life-threatening. Delayed diagnosis may occur in cases of cancer, when a doctor fails to thoroughly investigate a patient's symptoms to determine the probable cause. Some forms of cancer, untreated, can spread and become virtually untreatable in a short time. Delayed diagnosis may also occur in the emergency room, during a childbirth or in other cases where a doctor must act quickly to determine what is wrong with a patient in order to begin treatment.
