Missouri House Representatives Endorse Abortion Pill Restrictions to Help Avoid Medical Malpractice

Currently, women are permitted to get a prescription for an abortion-inducing drug, "mifepristone", 24 hours after getting a consultation from a medical professional or certain staff at a facility such as Planned Parenthood. It does not require a physical examination by a doctor. After the consultation, a prescription for the drug can be obtained. The new legislation received overwhelming approval in the Missouri House in the first round of voting. If the same occurs in the needed second vote then the proposed law will be passed to the Senate for further approval. Supporters of the new legislation argue that mifepristone, also known as RU-486, can pose serious risks to the woman taking the abortion drug and feel that the law would help make it safer for women to take. Did you get ill or suffer a serious injury after taking prescription drugs or medication? Work with a St. Louis medical malpractice lawyer to pursue your legal options for compensation after a medication error.
If the proposed legislation becomes law then women will be required to get an actual physical examination by a doctor or physician before obtaining a prescription for RU-486. It would also require that the examining physician have privileges at a local medical facility including the ability to perform surgery if needed. Additionally, the prescribing doctor would also have to carry a substantial medical malpractice insurance policy. The doctor would be required to have a policy that provides a minimum of $1 million in compensation per incident of medical malpractice in connection with a patient taking mifepristone.
